Lightaxe
Let me explain what my idea of a lightaxe is.
The basic principle of a lightsaber blade is that high-powered energy is unleashed through a series of positively charged focusing lenses and energizers and runs back to a negatively charged fissure ringing the emitter.
But why does the energy have to run through a fissure ringing the emitter?
Instead the energy could be emitted in an angle of about 30-45° and could run back to a heavy charged fissure running along the side of the hilt, forming an axe-like bow of energy.
The energy needed to create such a massive blade could be delivered by a big power cell, hidden in the extended hilt(from 60 cm to 1,5 meters).
Naturally, the blade is just good for attacking and blocking or reflecting blaster fire(if the wielder possesses the necessary precision), so the hilt has to be made out of a lightsaber-resistant material like Cortosis, otherwise the next Jedi/Sith would simply destroy the lightaxe with one simple strike.
So it would be a really expensive weapon but it's strength in combat can't be denied.
Typically most people would think of the lightaxe being a weapon of a sith or dark jedi, but I always liked the idea of hero wielding a axe instead of a sword.
I love the style of this lightsaber and think a similar(though not as feminine) design could come out well on a lightaxe.

It's an interesting concept, but how would you reconcile the properties of bending the energy along the "fan" of the blade? Where would the force come from to pull it back into the unit instead of dispersing it?

How could said principle be explained in regards to the original lightsaber?
It doesn't have to make sense - it's Star Wars.

I can only agree to Asok - this is Star Wars, which always has been less scientific(I mean we've got things like the force...).
I'm no scientist, so I don't know how it should work exactly, but I guess the blade could be forced back into the unit with the fissure, if correctly charged. To create an axe-blade I think this would mean to have the fissure being charged stronger, the farer it get's from th emitter.
Things could be easier if the axe-blade would be a bearded axe. Then we've got the blade emitted in a right angle to the hilt and have to bend the blade less strongly.
There are many other exotic lightweapons one could question but again - this is Star Wars ;)

Actually the easiest way to explain a Light Axe, would be the same way you explain a lightwhip... With cortosis being made into the axe shape, and the light shines around it.... Only problem there would be that when you shut it off, you wouldn't have just the handle, but you'd have the cortosis axe out at all times as well... Just a thought of how it could be done.

Another idea which would stress that this weapon is indeed a heavy weapon. In the end it is up to the artist how it is done though there is one specification: the hilt has to reach up to the actual axe-blade, so the axe-blade(be it pure energy or a cortosis blade) is the only thing sticking out of the hilt (when activated).

A friend of mine drew up some rough concepts on how a pure-energy lightaxe could work...basically he used the idea with the negatively charged fissure on the side of the hilt, but added some kind of turbine vane to redirect the blade and therefore change the angle in which the blade is emitted. The result is, that the wielder can swap between axe mode and lightsaber/lightstaff mode.

Here's the explanation:
C:
Curving-emitter : directs the energy into the direction of the fiber direction of the material.
Something like a turbine vane in a turbine.
But the sole purpose of the curving-emitter is to direct pure energy in a certain direction.
1:
This mount is linked with both movable c-emitters.
Its purpose is to adjust the angular adjustment of the emitters and therefore also to adjust the alignment of the energy-blade.
2:
Movable plates, that protect the emitters in the lightsaber-mode and protects the gap left open by the energy-blade in axe-mode.
This is necessary, as a single hit with a blaster or a strike with another melee weapon could pass by this gap and harm the wielder of the lightaxe.
3:
Negatively charged "fissure". Actually this electrode is located on the outside of the hilt so it can pull the energy in more easily. Since the "fissure" is laid open, it is protected from the sides.
4a:
Energy-blade, upside. Is thick but gets thinner the farer it is away from the emitter.
4b:
Energy-blade, inside. Is the most stable part of the blade as is the thickest and strongest part, since it is the shortest way to the negatively charged "fissure".
5:
Energy-blade, front side. Thinnest but sharpest area of the lightaxe. Energy has the longest way. The impact of the blow is focused on this small contact surface.
6: (Hidden, actually the "fissure")
Guard plates, which protect the "fissure" and enables the wielder to hold the hilt in lightsaber-mode without having to touch the "fissure" and harm himself or damage the "fissure".
I hope it explains the idea of the pure-energy lightaxe.

Oh come on - no one got the slightest interest in this?
I figure that it kinda looks like I'm ungrateful to Xanamiar and Mercy and their version of a lightaxe, but I'm not. I appreciate their efforts and think I might put their lightaxe into use on a different character, but not for the character I originally intended.
I pissed off Xanamiar more than one time during creation of his version(which I'm sorry for), but I still have the feeling, that the original idea got lost. I simply can't imagine a Jedi-like character(he isn't one but still is a good guy) wielding a cortosis lightaxe - it is simply too menacing(at least in my eyes).

You never pissed me off... Told you to start with I'm not an artist ... Just said that if you were going to be exacting on what you want, to make sure you post it. And you didn't give much time between posts this time, for anyone to even think of taking it up.
Be patient, and wait.. If no one picks it up, then oh well.
